It’s a great time of the season to be a pass holder at Mt. Hood Meadows! We’re getting some of the best snow we’ve seen all year, as El Nino has delivered some powdery storms the past few weeks increasing our base depth to 9 feet - one of the deepest snowpacks in North America! That should give way to some sunsational spring skiing and riding as we get further into March and April.
We're celebrating spring with some new discounts for Unlimited Season Pass holders - and that includes the Spring Pass purchasers. We also have a new page where you can review the days you visited Meadows this season, and even count the lifts you rode from the scan report.
Track Your Turns
We're beta testing a new feature on our web site, allowing pass holders to review their daily visits and lift rides. Click the link and log in to view your scans this season. You should be able to see the days you were at Meadows and even the lifts you were scanned at. You’ve probably noticed we haven’t been scanning at Cascade and Shooting Star, but we’ll be making that optional for those that would like to be scanned.
Here’s the link to see your scans.

I managed to get separated from my 4 year old son today while loading the Cascade Chair. I'd like to whole-heartedly thank the skiers and the lift operators that helped us reunite... especially the folks who rode up with him on the chair, and kept him feeling calm.
What could have been a traumatic experience has actually boosted my sons confidence, and reenforced the sense of community and cooperation that I feel up at the mountain.
I'd also like to thank the lift-operators at Meadows that consistently recognize and great him by name (before reaching for the pass)... way to stoke the kids!

MT. HOOD, OR (March 6, 2010) – More than 200 people packed the Finish Line Sports Bar and Grill Saturday to see the top 10 finalists of the 1st Annual Mt. Hood Meadows Film Festival. The crowd was blown away by the creativity, riding ability, showcasing of Mt. Hood Meadows and overall quality of film making the finalists presented.
Meadows Executive Director of Communications Dave Tragethon said the festival was extraordinarily successful beyond what organizers originally expected. “We have passionate, talented and dedicated film makers who totally impressed our judges and the audience with their exceptional work. It was the perfect combination of scenic mountain and terrain, talented riders and the creative eyes of filmers and editors to showcase the great mountain.”
Taking top honors was Adam Fleck’s “So Far So Good” which combined a crew of very talented riders, panoramic shots showcasing all aspects of Meadows terrain, time lapse photography and slow motion to present style, grace and intrigue.
Here's Adam's award winning video.
The “films” were submitted on video and evaluated on several criteria:
- Skiing / snowboarding at Mt. Hood Meadows in a compelling, positive, entertaining and/or intriguing way.
- Quality of finished piece – video, post production, audio quality, use of music.
- Creative aspects and approach to the project.
- Story telling.
- Overall impression.
All finalists received a logoed backpack from Columbia Sportswear, a GoPro Camera and a $50 gift card to Meadows. Fleck also took home the best of show prize of $500. Event sponsors included Columbia Sportswear, Go Pro Cameras, Full Sail Brewing, Fuel TV and Vaya Creative.
Here are links to the Finalists that were showcased at the Film Festival. These and other submissions can be seen in our online video gallery.

Story: I've been inspired by the Winter Olympics to pour some extra aggression into my skiing, though, at age 63, they won't let me compete. So this past gloriously sunny Sunday, I was all confident and cocky when I dropped off the ridge into Two Bowl. My first three or four turns were fine and plenty fast for an oldster. Then I found myself on my back, sliding and turning helplessly, like an upside-down turtle. When I rolled my feet to the downhill side to try to recover, I was going too fast, so just touching the skis to the snow popped them off. I was picking up speed on the slick, spring-like surface. There was no stopping my tumbling fall.
As I fell, like Alice down the rabbit hole, I had time to ponder my plight. One thought was, uh oh, this could turn bad. I’m not young and rubbery any more. Another thought was, what a waste of a good run. A final thought was, don't get tangled in your poles. I let my arms fall to the sides and the poles departed. Unencumbered by gear, I relaxed and enjoyed the rest of the slide to the bottom.
I stood up and realized I wasn't hurt a bit. I looked at the scattered gear strewn all down the slope and marveled at the distance I'd tumbled. Except for the sheer terror, it was exhilarating. I'll soon be back for more.

Meadows: We love it when a story has a happy ending. Sage advice from a hearty skier who knows how to hit the slopes, with and without her skis on!

I just wanted to let you guys know I had a wonderful time learning to ski in a group lesson with Brent on Sunday (the 10 am lesson 2/27). He was so patient with us and I had no idea how easy he would make it. I thought I'd spend the whole two hours on my butt, but instead, I spent the whole afternoon skiing...can't wait to come back up, and thanks Brent! I've wanted to learn to ski my entire life. My goal is to get good enough to ski back down the mountains I climb. I've spent a lot of time on Hood's summit, but skiing is a whole new thing. Thanks for helping me experience the mountain in an entirely different way!

I want to thank everyone involved who provided the opportunity for our middle school students to experience a day cross country skiing. My understanding is that more than 120 students throughout the Hood River County Schools were involved.
In our school, many of our students lack the financial ability to enjoy an activity of this sort. With you providing the equipment, lessons and the facility, our kids got to do something for the first time. They returned to school the next day telling and retelling their personal adventures on "the mountain".

If our school can ever be of assistance to you, do not hesitate to ask.

This year has been such a great year to call Meadows home! Every time we come up (often) we are greeted by name. . .which is amazing. Starting with Kevin Brown, but details like that don't escape adorable Justine in the restaurant. Seriously-always greated by name and with a smile.
Don't know what you are doing different, but many of us are talking about it. Brian and Matt at the bar are the same story. Just one good solid team, and a great experience every time. No complaints here!

The SuperPipe and Boardercross are being rebuilt this week. We expect the new SuperPipe to be ready Monday, March 8. A rebuild is normal as you can cut the pipe only so many times before it becomes too wide (and we start to rub up against the inground walls). It also allows us to put the new snow we received last week to good use - it's amazing how much snow it takes to fill in and reshape the Superpipe. It's worth the wait - we'll have a perfectly cut SuperPipe ready for spring riding next week.
The Boardercross should be ready by March 9th, but it will be closed for training and competitions only. We'll be stepping up the course as it will first host the OISA State High School Championships, then the USSA Revolution Tour followed by the USSA NorAM SBX Championships. There's going to be some great riding at Meadows this spring.
Film Festival Saturday
We are impressed by the number of and quality of videos submitted for the Film Festival. Many feature awesome riders in our terrain parks. Forest Park, Rose City and Shipyard provided some great set ups for filming this season. You can preview some submissions in our gallery of what you'll see this Saturday - of course we'll be playing the high res versions on the big screen in the Finish Line Pizzeria and Sports Bar - 4 to 6 PM! Thanks to our sponsors Columbia Sportswear, Go Pro Cameras, Full Sail Brewing, Fuel TV and Vaya Creative.
Sign up for 3 Day Freestyle Camps
We have two sessions scheduled - March 22 - 24 and March 29 - 31. They're a great opportunity to take your park and pipe skills to the next level. Five hours of instruction each day with a park specialized instructor. Topics covered will include, but are not limited to: jumps, half-pipe, rails and boxes, flatland, all-mountain freestyle, park safety and etiquette. Groups will be split up by age and ability.
Whether training for the next level of tricks or just looking to enter the park for the first time, this camp is a great way to progress your freestyle skills. The camp is open to anybody 7 to 14 who is an intermediate level skier/rider. (Intermediate level means for snowboarders that you are capable of making full turns (heel to toe, toe to heel) on most blue terrain. For skiers, it means that you are able to ski parallel on most blue terrain.)
Reservations are required at least 48 hours before the first day of camp. Call 503.337.2222, ext. 1419 to reserve your space today!

It's the storm we've all been waiting for - so far 15 inches of in the past two days, 8 of that in the last 24 hours and 5 inches since the lifts closed for night operations Wednesday evening. That means fresh tracks this morning for powderhounds.
High winds are still limiting access to the upper mountain placing both Cascade and Vista on standby. We ran cats up there to groom but within minutes their tracks are covered with six foot wind drifts. It's amazing what high winds and a lot of snow can do.
Private Reserve will open at 9 AM this morning. Patrol has been running AC routes in Heather since dawn and there's a much better chance of the Canyon opening - at least from Twilight down - today than yesterday. So those heading to the Canyon will be treated to all 15 inches of fresh along with deep pockets of wind deposited POW!
Have fun in the new snow, but be aware of deep snow hazards. Ski and ride with a buddy and keep track of each other.
We'll see you in the powder!
Oh - and one last shameless plug for those who haven't already purchased a season pass - the online Spring Pass $149 special ends Sunday. Looks like El Nino is delivering as promised - late season snow - so now's a great time to get the best price on the best spring skiing and riding on Mt. Hood!
