The Crossbow has arrived! This innovative feature was designed by our parks crew, constructed by Kurt Heine. We have plans to use it in the "Snake & Hammer" Banked Slalom event March 30, but until then it will be our signature feature in Forest Park. The elegant double C-Rail design allows approaches from multiple directions, allowing you to get creative. C Rail it, go straight over the top, jib a side or event transfer diagonally. The feature is ready for you to play on it.

Meadows has joined with Windell's and USASA to present the Meadows Rail Jams this season. We kicked it off Saturday with an awesome rail jam hosting all levels of freestyle skiers and snowboarders stoked about the early season set up in Shipyard.

The next Rail Jam will be January 12. Those participating in the series have a chance to qualify for some additional prizes through Windells.
Meadows Parks is weathering all the new snow well - with Shipyard, The Zoo and Forest Park operating. Rose City will be built up for the upcoming competitions. And with more snow we'll be able to get Park Place and ultimately the half pipe under construction.

The Burton Mountain Festival includes an activity for kids as young as 3 years old - the Riglet Park. This is an area set aside for kids to demo small sized Burton boots strap on a Burton board with a Riglet Reel - a leash that allows for smooth pulling. The area has small snow features for fun sliding, which also helps build balance and technique.
The Riglet Park is scheduled to operate Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM - 3 PM. There is no charge, although parents will need to sign a liability release for their kids. No preregistration is needed, but equipment is limited to 15 sets, so there may be a wait depending on the turn out. Riglet sessions will be about 15 minutes in length (longer if there isn't a wait.) Helmets are strongly suggested. Our instructors will pull the kids through the park - parents provide support (and take pictures!)

We have so much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving Day. Meadows opened the season Thursday with good coverage and even some freshies for those choosing to recreate on the holiday. There were smiles a plenty and raves about the coverage, overall condition of the mountain and the new RFID gates.
An extraordinary effort to haul parking lot snow to the lifts allowed for the Thanksgiving day opening. The entire maze line at Mt. Hood Express and the other three lifts that opened were built up from the parking lot snow, thanks to a rented "Dump Cat". Thousands of cubic tons of snow was hauled over two days to enable the opening.
The Shipyard rail park also benefited from the dump cat's efforts, opening with no less than eight features and four separate lines for jibbin'.
Patrol and lift crews worked tirelessly through the day, and were able to open our 2nd high speed quad Shooting Star for some late afternoon fun.
Meadows is open for the season operating from 9 AM - 4 PM daily until night operations kick in (once we get some more snow).

The next stop on the national Under Armour 3RD RAIL JAM is Mt. Hood Meadows this Saturday, February 25. Now in it's 5th year, the 3rd Rail Jam is a national, touring, grassroots snow sport competition coupled with live hip-hop music, art, fashion, technology, and culture.
The Competition:
A slope styled rail contest held in true jam format. Judges are present at all features to provide the best scoring coverage possible. Each event allows for up to 150 riders separated into 4 divisions: all girls, 15 and under, best of breed, and skiers. Each division competes separately in a two round elimination for cash and prizes. There is a $25 entry fee, and $5 from each entry fee will be donated to AMPED 4-A-Cure to erase cancer. The event runs from 3 – 8 PM at Meadows’ Shipyard Rail Park.

The filming and riding talents of "The Hood Crew" stomped the front page of Newschoolers.com with video compiled at Meadows Parks. With the opening of Park Place, and jumps added to Rose City and Forest Park, the parks are shaping up for some quality riding, fun and progression this holiday weekend. This is the first official entry to the Meadows Film Festival – and based on the quality riding talent and steady camera work, is an early favorite for making the top 10!

Rose City Park opened Friday. The park offers medium to large features and serves as the primary slope style competition venue for high school league training and events. The Park has two boxes, two double barrels and a jump. We've also built some small jumps in the Zoo and a couple of medium to large jumps in Forest Park. Let’s talk about parks. As you all know, we’re on the back side of a huge storm cycle that buried our parks under 115” of new snow. We had to start from scratch, right? Actually, we were at less-than-scratch: before we could rebuild, we had to dig out all the buried features and groom the runs flat again.
That took a few days. Then park crew built the banked slalom for comps last weekend. OISA (Oregon High School Snowboarding) teams train at Meadows and hold their league competitions here, and the banked slalom discipline is their current focus.
Once we were back to square one, with flat-groomed park runs, we started with the Zoo. Why? Our philosophy is to always have something for everyone in our parks, so we start with the smallest and work up to the biggest. First we build the Zoo, then we build Forest and Shipyard, and then we work on Rose City and Park Place. Last place on the building list goes to the pipe, because once we start building it, most of our resources are there, and we’re limited in what we can do with the other parks.
So, where are we now? The Zoo is done. Shipyard is finished. The banked slalom is done. We’re adding features to Forest Park, including some jumps for our jump-starved Facebook fans. We've begun construction on Rose City, and next up, we’ll be starting work on Park Place. Watch for the progress in those areas over the next couple of weeks. It takes a lot of man-hours and cat time to push snow into jump foundations, so it will take some time, but that’s where we’ll be throwing our resources next.
We’re listening to you. We know you want jumps, and they are the next thing on the list. Now… Mother Natures just needs to keep the new snowfall in reasonable amounts, so we don’t have to start over from less-than-scratch again!

The Vista Halfpipe opened today (Thursday). It's 200 feet long and has 18 foot walls. We cut it with the Zaugg. An extraordinary effort was made to farm the snow and then patiently cut the walls - kudos to Freestyle Grooming Manager Jason Stankevich. The Vista pipe is the only halfpipe in the Northwest. It's accessed by the Vista Express high speed quad. It's located higher up on the mountain which has more snow than the 4 feet we have in the base area. It's in a natural gulch which helps collect the snow and shape the walls, and is often the earliest opening halfpipe in the Northwest. Enjoy!

For the first time ever, Burton is launching the Burton Mountain Festival tour, a completely new experience that offers riders a full day of FREE on-snow activities, including Burton 2012 product demos, music, sponsor giveaways, mini parks for the smallest snowboarders and an amateur snowboard contest. The Burton Mountain Festival will be presented at Mt. Hood Meadows January 14 – 16 over Martin Luther King weekend.
Burton Mountain Festival includes four key elements: Burton Test Ride, Riglet Parks, Pro-Test and an après ski party for an entire day of good times. And while each festival stop is unique, the foundation of the festival is the Burton Test Ride program - where virtually the entire 2012 Burton hardgoods line will be on tap for riders to test at absolutely no charge. Riders can try out a variety of boards, boots and bindings to get a feel for their ultimate set-up.
In addition to Test Ride, the Mt. Hood Meadows stop will have a Pro-Test Rail Jam event, Sunday, January 15 and a Pro-Test Half Pipe competition Monday, January 16. These are amateur snowboard competitions for men and women. Riders can also win wildcard spots to compete in the US Open pre-qualifiers, and all Pro-Test events are 4Star TTR World Snowboard Tour events. For the youngest riders, every Burton Mountain Festival stop will also feature a Burton Riglet Park where kids as young as three can try out snowboarding for FREE. Kids will also be able to try out Burton’s revolutionary Riglet Reel, a specially designed reel attached to the nose of youth snowboards that makes learning easier than ever. And certified snowboard instructors will help kids learn to ride on mini features like boxes, ramps and rails.

The first jam of the Meadows After Dark Rail Series was a huge hit Saturday evening. Close to 70 freestylers - snowboarders and skiers, registered for the jam. One hour sessions were held, broken down for women, for intermediate men and for advanced men. Calm winds and clear skies presented the perfect weather - parks crew maintained the features perfectly and a constant vibe from DJ Adam set the tone for a fun night of riding.
The big draw besides free registration and hot chocolate from Swiss Miss was the prize packages from Trew, Grenade, Never Summer and Icelantic. First place men in the advanced and women received Never Summer snowboards or Icelantic skis, respectively.

We've opened up three of our Meadows Parks - Shipyard which opened on our opening day (a rail park located under the Buttercup lift); Forest Park a street style rail and jump park serviced by Hood River Express, and The Zoo our entry level beginner's park. Parks crew is working hard to add features to these parks, and open up others as we get more snow this early season. Here's a quick video review of the parks.

Our four new snowcats arrived Tuesday on a day when wintry rain transitioned into snow. Three of the Prinoth cats are BR-350s - the workhorse of our grooming fleet that you've seen us use for several years. Grooming Manager Rob Gayman describes the BR-350 as a workhorse, reliable and powerful capable of tackling the extreme weather and conditions.
Our new snowcat is the Bixon X - set up to specialize in freestyle terrain grooming. Additional maneuverability of both the front blade and rear tiller will help dial in the transitions, particularly on more irregularly shaped features, making park building and maintenance faster while improving the product, according to Freestyle Terrain Park Manager Jason Stankevich. It's also more fuel efficient, making it greener. Here's Jason to tell you all about the Bison X!

Oregon's top high school snowboarding athletes are competing at Meadows this week in the
OISA State Championships. Thursday the venue is our
Banked Slalom course for Banked Slalom and Boarder Cross events. Friday the action moves to the Rose City Park for the
Slope Style competition. Saturday events conclude at the
Super Pipe.

Blake McCoy took top honors at the 2nd annual Mt. Hood Meadows Film Festival, presented Saturday at Meadows. Blake and a solid core of riders took full advantage of the late February powder draped over Meadows' spectacular steep terrain in his submission entitled, "Mt. Hood Shreadows".
Meadows showed the top 10 finalists of the Film Festival, transforming the Vertical Restaurant into a theater. A crowd of 200 packed the theater and cheered on the film makers. All 10 finalists won a prize package including a logoed Columbia Sportswear backpack, a $50 Meadows gift card, a KEEN footwear certificate, vitaminwater®, Full Sail attire and Rollic hat and water bottle..

The top three finalists also received Go Pro HD helmet cams. Blake's entry edged out Tommy Ellingson - who had some of the most amazing point of view camera footage of big mountain powder riding at Meadows, and Evan Applegate who produced "Hood Love", an upbeat well edited feature which used time lapse photography and fun riding in tribute to Mt. Hood. Blake also received the $500 cash prize.

The Freestyle Coaching Park will be open all three days of the President's holiday.

Come check out Mt. Hood Meadows terrain park for freestyle coaching located next to Shipyard directly below the bottom station of Vista Express. The Park is run by our Ski & Snowboard School and offers freestyle coaching with video review to all participants.
The park is equipped with a rope tow so you can lap features without hiking. The cost to get in is $25, you can stay as long as you want and the hours of operation are 9:00am - 5:00pm weekends and holidays. A lift ticket is required in addition to the Freestyle Coaching Park fee to access the park.

On February 13, 2010, Kyle Cryblskey died while snowboarding at Mt. Hood Meadows. Since then Kyle's family has started a campaign of sorts to promote helmet usage skiing, snowboarding and other action sports. On the anniversary of Kyle's death, family members attended a booth at Meadows to promote helmet safety.
Here's a note from Kyle's mom, Deborah Cryblskey.
I just wanted to get back to you regarding Sunday 2-13-11. We collected a total of $380, of which I will use probably $300 to buy helmets from my small business owner here in Battle Ground. She has a paintball/skater store, but can get me the brand new 888 helmets at a reasonable cost. She has helped me quite a bit with our efforts, and the kids seem to like the Triple 8 brand. I have also collected 30 assorted bike/skate helmets in memory of Kyle that we will set up a table for at the next skate event, believe it or not Battle Ground has quite the skate park. Anyway.....
I met Electra from SOS Outreach and recieved emails from Malee, I liked Electra quite a bit, and I will get my "stickered" helmets to them once they come in.
I loved being at your facility, 3 of my biggest high lights of the day were
- I met a lady on your ski patrol who was there the day Kyle died, kinda emotional but I was glad to tell her how much I appreciated everyones' efforts that day,
- A young man stopped by who does web sites for 7 colleges in Oregon and offered to do one for Kyle's Helmets for free, this will help "legitimize" our efforts, we will take him up on this for sure, and
- I received so much encouraging feedback from your guests!
I also was glad to see how many people were wearing helmets! WOW a lot has changed since I was up there last.
Thank you again to you and your staff, everyone made us feel very welcome, and again we would like to be part of any safety effort in the future.

Hey there Park Riders!
Park crew here with your update to the comings and goings up here on the slopes!
These last couple weeks have seen some real development in our parks and we’d love to share it with you. First and foremost we’ve installed an entirely new line to skier’s right of the preexisting jump line in Rose City! Yay! This line includes a fun box, a ledge, and two smaller sized jumps. We hope you are enjoying them as much as we are! Shipyard got shipshape for last weeks rail jam and now features a down flat round rail.
Friday Night Rail Jam Video
In Park Place you might have noticed that the fun doesn’t stop with the jumps any longer. Oh no! We’ve put up a flat down box top and… are you ready for it…a 64ft down flat down box top! Count it, 64 ft! Battle it out with your friends for the title of “1st Successful 50-50” because we certainly did.
As for the rest of our parks: Keep watching, we hear the winds of change might be blowing through the branches of Forest in the near future.

The Friday Night Rail Jam Series will rock Shipyard this season! The series kicks off this Friday, January 28, from 6 - 8 PM. Music will set the tone for the evening, as riders of all abilities session on featured rails. The event progresses from lower levels to more advanced throughout the evening. Prizes and schwag from our sponsors will keep the vibe going.
No charge to compete - but a liability release is required which you can be downloaded for parental or legal guardian signature for those under 18. Helmet required, no inverted aerials.

Hey there beloved park riders, your Park Crew here with some updates about what going on here on the hill.
If youve been shredding up here (and braving the monsoon conditions) this last week you will probably have noticed a few changes on the hill. The most notable of those the building of the Rose City Park and the Boarder/Skiier cross track which are located on the South side of the resort. Here's a video shot by Adam Fleck at Rose City Park.
We wrapped up a wet but successful REV tour on the competition venues last week and are looking forward to the Burton Am this Sunday and Monday followed by Noram racing on the cross track this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
As for the North side Parks (Forest and Park Place) they are continually being shown love by our awesome park groomers. Because weve been focusing on the South side to get our venues dialed in for our competitions we havent been able to change stuff up too much but in following weeks watch for more features to show up in Park Place and the tweaking of Forest Park. Were stoked to get these parks built out for your riding pleasure!
So until next time, shred hard, pray for an end to the torrential downpours, and give your Park Crew a hug next time you see um out there with their rakes. Keep the feedback coming because we are here for you!

MT. HOOD MEADOWS, OR (Jan. 14) - The U.S. Revolution Tour wrapped up its competition at Mt. Hood Meadows, OR with the men’s and women’s snowboardcross and skicross. Hunter Murphy (Deephaven, MN) and Celine Valentin (Simsbury, CT) were able to win the men’s and women’s snowboardcross. Randy Detrick (Saylorsburg, PA) and Tania Prymak (Goshen, NY) took home first place in the men’s and women’s skicross.

MT. HOOD MEADOWS, OR (Jan 13). — Thursday belonged to U.S. skier Kendall Deighan (Vail, CO) as she swept the U.S. Revolution Tour, winning both the women’s slopestyle and halfpipe skiing contests at Mt. Hood Meadows. Tanner Coulter (Eagle, CO) and Daniel Rosenblum (Stamford, CT) grabbed wins in the men’s slopestyle and halfpipe skiing respectively,
After weather postponed Wednesday’s halfpipe competition, skiers were determined to compete in both halfpipe and slopestyle Thursday despite rain and fog. Deighan took the top spot in the women’s slopestyle with a score of 60.50, followed by Kirsten Cooley (Colorado Springs, CO) and Katie Turner (Littleton, CO).
On the men’s side, Coulter captured the slopestyle crown with a score of 90.00 beating out second place finisher Andy Partridge (Park City, UT) and third’s Taeden Schneider-Clark of Canada.
Deighan capped her successful Thursday with an afternoon halfpipe victory. Behind her finished Maddie Eakin (Bend, OR) and Renee Shapiro (Sun Valley, ID).
Rounding out the action, Rosenblum won the men’s halfpipe event, scoring a 31.30, topping second place Conor Garrecht-Connelly (Steamboat Springs, CO) and third place Carson Lehouillier (Squaw Valley, CA).

Meadows Parks interactive web page will keep you entertained and up to date on the features, riders and action going on in our parks this season!
The flash enabled park allows you to select a park to see how the features are laid out, and then select each feature for photos and videos. Select the entrance of a park for a video which shows the flow through the park. There are also tabs for information on Smart Style, the ATML Method, the Karma Army and to take a Park Smart quiz to win weekly prizes. The new park site is open - enjoy!

Rose City Park debuted for the season this week, in time to host the USSA Rev Tour snowboard and ski slopestyle events. Adam Fleck put together this video showing off the features of the park, which is now open for public riding when not being used for competitions.

Mt. Hood Meadows will throw a party in the park at its Shipyard Park New Year's Eve from 8 PM until Midnight. The party is open to everyone, but focused on the teen crowd that can't party with the Essentials (21 and older party in Vertical).
DJ Nate will pump up the vibe, snacks with cider and hot chocolate will be served and there'll be fun contests and chances to win some great prizes from our sponsors. A "Fireworks Wander" will be organized to bring revellers from the Park to the base area to watch the Fireworks, followed by a "Slow-down Throw-down" rail jam. Helmet required along with a registration form signed by parent or legal guardian.

Mt. Hood Meadows opened up a nice present Christmas Day - our 500 foot long in-ground SuperPipe. It's one of the only pipes in the country to be operating this early, featuring 18 foot walls and its night-lighted. Our grooming crew has been farming the available snow to amass the considerable amount of snow needed to build the SuperPipe.
Park Place now has three jumps - two tables and a step up - as we continue to build out our parks.

It's still early season, but the trail grooming work and efforts made by our parks crew this summer on Tamarack are paying off big time! Forest Park opened Saturday - the earliest that park has ever opened. Currently we have eight features in one primary line - but as you know Forest Park will grow with more features, innovation and diversity. It's just plain fun, as this video shot and edited by our videographer Adam Fleck shows (riders: Ryan Falk, Matt Kratzer, Enzo Plati, Jace Reitan). Enjoy!

Forest Park debuts for the season today (Saturday). Parks crew reports that 8 features have been placed on what has become Meadows most popular intermediate park. The rambling nature of the terrain combined with the urban rail features makes for a fun and interesting ride.
Parks crew intalled 8 rails total - initially we have 1 flat box, 1 butter pad, 1 down rail, 1 mail box, 1 down culvert, 1 down box, 1 flat double barrel, and 1 flat single barrel. More features will be added to provide greater intrigue and variety to Forest Park.
Take a first run through Forest Park with video from Temira, Mt. Communications.
That brings our total number of parks to three, Forest Park, The Zoo and Shipyard - not bad for November! Between the three parks Meadows has 20 features for your freestyling enjoyment.

We got the season off with some great freestyling in both the Zoo and in Shipyard.
The Zoo has 7 boxes set up for early season skill building. Shipyard has 2 boxes and 2 ledges. Both parks will grow as we add more features.

The Meadows parks web site will have a whole new look and be much more informational this season. We're working with North Pole Design to create an interactive site which allows us to update the park web site to reflect the placement of features in our parks. So as a park grows and new features are added, so will the web site.
You'll be able to "drill down" from the landing page view of all the parks, into a specific park, and then even feature by feature.
This is what the landing page of the new web site will look like. You'll be able to see the locations of the different parks and use the Small / Medium / Large buttons to identify the relative size of the parks. There's also be Park Smart messaging and alerts.
Select a park - in this case "The Zoo" and you'll be able to see the lay out of the different features in the park.
Click on a feature to see what it looks like. Notice there are photo and video buttons that are activated as we add them. You'll be able to send us your shots of that feature and we can upload them to the gallery.
We also want to thank Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital for partnering with us on our Park Smart Challenge which we'll be debuting at the Portland Ski Show. This is an online test about terrain park safety and etiquette focusing on Smart Style, ATML and matching your riding skills with the right-sized park. You'll be able to take the challenge, and upon successful completion be entered into a weekly drawing for a prize pack valued at around $200 from Dakine, thanks again to Providence Hood River!
All of this will be found under our parks section of our web site. We're looking forward to a fun season of progression and Park Smart riding in Meadows Parks this season!

We’re almost at the midpoint between seasons – and here on Mt. Hood that’s not as long as most ski resorts. We’ve been hard at work with summer trails and lift maintenance so we can continue to consistently offer the best skiing and snowboarding experience that we can provide. Looks like we’re going to get a lot of help from nature this season – a La Nina is forecast, which for the Northwest and Mt. Hood historically means colder temperatures and more snow accumulation. Let’s hope it starts early so we can all be enjoying the slopes in November (or even earlier if possible!)
Season Pass Renewal
Season passes will be on sale on our web site by September 1. Prices will be announced soon - we’re finalizing the process of allowing last year’s pass holders to simply renew their pass online (through the purchase process,) which will allow you to use last year’s pass this season. So those not wanting to get a new picture will be able to go direct to the lifts this season using last season's pass. We still need to get a liability release signed for this season and we’re working out details to make that most convenient, which includes a schedule of appearances at movie premiers, retail locations, sign up parties and of course the Portland Ski Show to make it convenient for you.
New Adventures in Freestyle
This season we’ll be offering the “New Adventure Freestyle Terrain Park” weekends and holidays, staffed by our ski school for those venturing into freestyle. It will be located next to the Shipyard Park under the Buttercup lift, and serviced by our “repurposed” rope tow - no additional charge to those being coached in our freestyle lessons.
Summer trail maintenance includes the popular terrain where we build parks, which will allow us to operate parks more consistently regardless of weather conditions. Fun, flow and progression along with consistency in operation is our freestyle experience focus to allow park riders to responsibly select features to match their ability and progress their skills.
A new freestyle online web experience will debut this fall – showcasing the features in our parks. We'll be able to locate features in our online parks as they are constructed in our real parks - and you'll be able to help us enhance the online experience by sending us your pix and video on those features. Together we'll be able to keep our park riding community connected.
You’ll also be hearing more about our Terrain Park Education program, emphasizing the Smart Style approach to freestyling. A challenging online quiz will be offered and those who take the challenge and pass will be rewarded with prizes, discounts and incentives. A blog on this topic will be coming this fall.

Located in the old Meadows Mart location – slope level of the North Lodge – Fresh Tracks will offer made-to-order sandwiches, salads and other fresh, healthful faire. The menu will favor local ingredients, organic when possible, and there will be some gluten free items available. The fresh smoothies, parfaits, stir-fried veggies over brown rice and organic oatmeal should be instant hits! A proud Director of Food Services Mark Fellows gives you a video tour of Fresh Tracks.

Cooper Spur Mt. Resort
Take a welcome break to Cooper Spur Mt. Resort on the north side of Mt. Hood. Surrounded by forest, Cooper Spur is a convenient escape for an overnight respite or a multi-day getaway. The CandyGrind Spring Splash Rail Jam will be held Saturday in Shipyard. We're working on the park to set up sweet rail lines for this fun event which will benefit SOS Outreach. Registration will be day of at Group Services in our main lodege from 8 - 10 AM. Warm ups then a rider's meeting and we expect the heats to start around 11 AM.
HELMETS ARE REQUIRED, as is a lift ticket or season pass. You can purchase a competitors ticket at registration for $45 (good for the entire mountain) or a Buttercup Only ticket for $35 if you're only going to hang at the event site. Even if you're hiking a lift ticket or season pass is required.
Here's the set up: 1 barrel to dance floor, 1 a-frame dance floor, 1 ball jib, 1 down flat down, 1 down flat, 1 down rail.
There's plenty of prizes thanks to all of our sponsors. There's also ski and snowboard divisions for men and women, with categories for under 15 and 15 and older. Heats will be determined once registration is completed. It's just $10 to register and half the registration fee goes to SOS Outreach.
Parks Scheduled to Operate Daily through April 25
We're planning on running our current park offerings daily through April 25. That includes Park Place and Forest Park served by the HRM lift. HRM operations could be affected by weather – we may decide not to operate HRM on certain days if the weather forecast or conditions suggest a low turn out day at the resort. We will announce operations on our snow phone and conditions page on our web site.
We'll be moving features to the Cascade Park for our May weekend operations. We may still offer Shipyard in May.

Mt. Hood Meadows turns into a snowboarding haunt during U.S. Snowboarding 2010 Revolution Tour March 16-21. The tour makes Meadows its last stop of four stages and the final competition to pluck up top juniors in the country to feed into the USSA pipeline.
The event produces the top national juniors who then are named to U.S. Snowboarding's Project Gold. The top four male and female junior athletes in halfpipe and snowboardcross will be selected for the project based on their overall results from the tour, which included competitions earlier in the season around the country. Project Gold athletes train together in the summer and receive invitations to select project events.
The Revolution Tour features open class competitions in halfpipe, slopestyle, and snowboardcross. The event at Mt. Hood Meadows launches March 16 in Rose City Park with slopestyle competitions for women and men followed March 17 with the halfpipe competitions taking place off the Easy Rider chair. The snowboardcross takes place March 18 on a course built in Daisy Bowl.
Spectators can watch some of the nation's best juniors competing in the tour. Slopestyle and halfpipe riders will range between 13-19 years old, but USSA does not permit snowboardcross for riders under 15 years old.
The 2010 NorAm Snowboardcross is also part of the event. Catch some of the best Canadian and U.S. competitors as they duke it out on the Daisy course March 20-21.

MT. HOOD, OR (March 6, 2010) – More than 200 people packed the Finish Line Sports Bar and Grill Saturday to see the top 10 finalists of the 1st Annual Mt. Hood Meadows Film Festival. The crowd was blown away by the creativity, riding ability, showcasing of Mt. Hood Meadows and overall quality of film making the finalists presented.
Meadows Executive Director of Communications Dave Tragethon said the festival was extraordinarily successful beyond what organizers originally expected. “We have passionate, talented and dedicated film makers who totally impressed our judges and the audience with their exceptional work. It was the perfect combination of scenic mountain and terrain, talented riders and the creative eyes of filmers and editors to showcase the great mountain.”
Taking top honors was Adam Fleck’s “So Far So Good” which combined a crew of very talented riders, panoramic shots showcasing all aspects of Meadows terrain, time lapse photography and slow motion to present style, grace and intrigue.

The “films” were submitted on video and evaluated on several criteria:
- Skiing / snowboarding at Mt. Hood Meadows in a compelling, positive, entertaining and/or intriguing way.
- Quality of finished piece – video, post production, audio quality, use of music.
- Creative aspects and approach to the project.
- Story telling.
- Overall impression.
All finalists received a logoed backpack from Columbia Sportswear, a GoPro Camera and a $50 gift card to Meadows. Fleck also took home the best of show prize of $500. Event sponsors included Columbia Sportswear, Go Pro Cameras, Full Sail Brewing, Fuel TV and Vaya Creative.

The SuperPipe and Boardercross are being rebuilt this week. We expect the new SuperPipe to be ready Monday, March 8. A rebuild is normal as you can cut the pipe only so many times before it becomes too wide (and we start to rub up against the inground walls). It also allows us to put the new snow we received last week to good use - it's amazing how much snow it takes to fill in and reshape the Superpipe. It's worth the wait - we'll have a perfectly cut SuperPipe ready for spring riding next week.
The Boardercross should be ready by March 9th, but it will be closed for training and competitions only. We'll be stepping up the course as it will first host the OISA State High School Championships, then the USSA Revolution Tour followed by the USSA NorAM SBX Championships. There's going to be some great riding at Meadows this spring.
Film Festival Saturday
We are impressed by the number of and quality of videos submitted for the Film Festival. Many feature awesome riders in our terrain parks. Forest Park, Rose City and Shipyard provided some great set ups for filming this season. You can preview some submissions in our gallery of what you'll see this Saturday - of course we'll be playing the high res versions on the big screen in the Finish Line Pizzeria and Sports Bar - 4 to 6 PM! Sign up for 3 Day Freestyle Camps
We have two sessions scheduled - March 22 - 24 and March 29 - 31. They're a great opportunity to take your park and pipe skills to the next level. Five hours of instruction each day with a park specialized instructor. Topics covered will include, but are not limited to: jumps, half-pipe, rails and boxes, flatland, all-mountain freestyle, park safety and etiquette. Groups will be split up by age and ability.
Whether training for the next level of tricks or just looking to enter the park for the first time, this camp is a great way to progress your freestyle skills. The camp is open to anybody 7 to 14 who is an intermediate level skier/rider. (Intermediate level means for snowboarders that you are capable of making full turns (heel to toe, toe to heel) on most blue terrain. For skiers, it means that you are able to ski parallel on most blue terrain.)

Mt. Hood Meadows is a beacon for winter film making. The resort and it's rugged and graceful slopes have been featured in travel, ski and more recently snowboard films and videos for more than 40 years. Meadows provides a beautiful backdrop and the subject matter for epic film making.
The Meadows Film Festival will be presented March 6 to showcase not only the beauty and majesty of our mountain, but the creativity and talent of our guests. Talent in the form of on-the-snow action skiing and riding showing off the attributes of the resort. There is nothing more splendid than capturing the perfect match of terrain and athleticism. Creativity in the story telling - the way the images, clips and edits are presented to make for an intriguing story.
The deadline for the Film Festival is Sunday, February 28. Our panel of esteemed judges will select up to the top 10 choices for showcasing March 6 at the Finish Line Pizzeria and Sports Bar. On Saturday, February 13, 23 year old Kyle Cryblskey suffered fatal injuries while landing a jump in a terrain park at Mt. Hood Meadows.
On behalf of the entire team here at Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort, we want to express our deepest condolences to Kyle’s family. Words seem so inadequate at a time like this. We can only imagine the grief and sorrow they are feeling.
Kyle’s untimely passing has impacted all of us here at Mt. Hood Meadows greatly. Although we did not know Kyle, it is evident that he had great passion for snow boarding and the outdoors in general. We share that same passion and will continue to do so in his honor.
Kyle’s family is urging everyone to wear helmets when skiing or snowboarding. We want to use this blog to help educate guests about helmets, as well as the Smart Style approach to riding terrain parks. Sharing this knowledge here may prevent such a tragedy in the future.

The National Ski Areas Association has developed the "Smart Style" Freestyle Terrain Safety initiative, a cooperative effort to continue the proper use and progression of freestyle terrain at mountain resorts, while delivering a unified message that is clear, concise, and effective.
1. MAKE A PLAN - Every time you use freestyle terrain, make a plan for each feature you want to use. Your speed, approach and take off will directly affect your maneuver and landing.
2. LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP - Scope around the jumps first, not over them. Know your landings are clear and clear yourself out of the landing area.
3. EASY STYLE IT - Start small and work your way up. (Inverted aerials not recommended).
4. RESPECT GETS RESPECT - From the lift line through the park.
The four points of Smart Style are printed in our trail map and on our web site. Signs are also posted at the entrance to our terrain parks.
This video explains how the Smart Style points apply to responsible park riding.
The video is aimed at educating guests on how to use freestyle terrain properly, and integrates the four points of Smart Style with the ATML method: Approach, Take-Off, Maneuver, and Landing. The video highlights an instrumental message in freestyle terrain use: avoid the backseat and land on your feet.
Helmet Usage
Skiing and snowboarding have always had risks, but they also have an excellent safety record. Skiers and snowboarders have less than a one in a million chance of being seriously injured or dying on the slopes. Serious head injuries account for only 2.6 percent of overall skiing/snowboarding injuries. Each skier or snowboarder’s behavior has as much or more to do with the safety of the sports as does any piece of equipment. If you choose to wear a helmet or use other types of equipment to protect yourself, be sure you understand the limits and proper use of that equipment. Don’t let safety equipment give you a false sense of security.
- A helmet can make a difference in reducing or preventing a head injury from a fall or other impacts. However, no helmet can protect the wearer against all foreseeable impacts and injuries to the head. You should be familiar with and/or memorize the "Your Responsibility Code.”
- A helmet's fit is most important. It's helpful to have an experienced sales person assist you with fit. A properly fit helmet will be comfortable with no pressure points. A helmet is not an item that you want to grow into. Mt. Hood Meadows sells and rents helmets.

It's been a busy week for Parks Crew which has been doing a great job embellishing our parks product even without the extra helping of snow we usually get.
The InGround SuperPipe is open! We used all kinds of crazy techniques to scrape the snow together and shape it into the 18 foot walls. This last snow storm literally put us over the top and the Northwest's ONLY SuperPipe is open at Mt. Hood Meadows!
The banked slalom course was built Friday night. The start pad is a little ways uphill from the easyrider bullwheel off of red road. The course runs down wallflower finishing just above the inground SuperPipe.
The ball feature has been added to the end of Forest Park. We extended Forest Park Tuesday evening adding 1 rainbow rail after the picnic table. The park is growing with additional rails being added.
Park Place was also extended further down Breakaway. We added 1 down rail.
Congrats to the crew - they've been working hard and the reward is yours with five parks (incuding Shipyard and The Zoo) and a SuperPipe for your holiday weekend enjoyment!

Freestyling is all about finding new and creative ways to express yourself. That's why we work with Kurt Heine of Heine tools to develop features for our parks. Kurt sent us some pictures of his latest innovation which we are calling "The Ball".
It is a gigantic globe, mounted on a four sided pedastal. Each pedastal has a trapezoidal face which should allow approaching it from three sides. A skilled stall on the top could even bring the down side into play on the dismount.
"The Ball" will be appearing soon most likely in Forest Park. So come to Meadows and get on the Ball! Have a Ball at Meadows! OK - that could be a little lame. Do you have a better name for this new feature?

The soaking we received the past two days will affect park operations today. Rose City, The Zoo and Shipyard are scheduled to be open but we weren't able to machine groom overnight due to the saturated snow surface. Park Place and Forest Park are closed this morning for evaluation - we may need to wait until we can groom Wednesday evening to get them open for Thursday.
Sorry for the interuption - we'll get as many features open and riding well as soon as we can.

Construction of Forest Park was started last night. It contains rollers, 1 funbox, 1 pole jam, 1 table top, and 1 down rail. It's a work in progress with more features planned. It will probably open for riding (when we get appropriate clearance) today.

Jason reports two more jumps were built in Park Place Sunday night - bringing the total up to four tables. Construction continues but we already have a nice progressive jump line. Here are some shots taken Sunday, December 20th of the first two features built. Not the best day for photographs but it was still fun riding!

Park Place is open! Mt. Hood's original jump park has two tables on it, constructed Saturday night by our stellar Paradise Parks crew (thanks Jason!) Also thanks to the snow we received this week to give us the base needed to open up this awesome Park. Tell your friends - and get some pictures!

The summer stump grinding paid off big time! Without the efforts of the parks crew this past summer, we would not be able to open this park. Forest Park will still be a little longer as we need some more snow on Tamarack - but looking at this week's forecast it shouldn't be long!

UPDATE: Our phenominal lift maintenance crew launched Vista Express at 9:46 AM. The Vista Superpipe Awaits! Snow reporter David Schor took the ride up to get the shot. Below the pictures is information about the new Step Up jump on Vista.
Jason Stankevich Freestyle Grooming Manager reports that a new step-up feature has been built in the Vista Park. It is located up on the ridge, far skiers right shortly after Nate's Other Way joins Texas Trails.
It will be open today unless the cold weather affects the operation of Vista and Cascade - both are scheduled but we had issues with the diesel in the auxillary engines freezing Monday. Cascade was opened Monday - and we are shooting for both lifts operating as scheduled Tuesday.
We should have some pictures of the step up and the superpipe later today. Here's a shot that was taken by Chris Williams just before the Superpipe opened last Thursday.

OK Pipe riders. Your Superpipe awaits you. This stretch of sunny weather allowed our Parks Grooming crew to get the Zaug up on Vista to shape up a 230 foot long Superpipe. It's the only one we know of on the West Coast and you'll find it here at Meadows!
Enjoy it now - as when it starts snowing again that 18 foot deep pipe gets buried. Superpipe in the sunshine. Be there!

Jason Stankevich our Freestyle Grooming Manager has announced that Vista Superpipe is under construction. It is located skiers right of lower Texas Trails. It will have 18ft walls and will be 230 feet in length - enough for 3 hits. It should be ready to ride by Thursday, possibly even Wednesday. When it opens it will be the only superpipe on the west coast!

November freestyling has been epic this early season at Meadows. Kudos to the parks crew for making the most of the snow we've received so far. Shipyard has been off the wall - well maybe on the wall with a dozen rails plus the Wallride. The Zoo has been pushing progression, allowing freestylers early season practice for the parks that will come with more snow. Rose City has a jump and four rails providing Slopesyle sessioning.
Here's some shots taken today, the last day of November, to commemorate a great start to the season!

We're excited about the efforts our Parks Crew is putting out this season - already building stellar parks at Shipyard and the Zoo, and now constructing jumps in Rose City. We're also stoked to ally ourselves with Nate Goodman - a film producer who's going to document what's going on in freestyle at Meadows this season. Here's his first feature - building Shipyard. We have 1 table top built in Rose City Slopestyle. This jump is located skiers right side of Rose City Park. We gathered more snow for the 2nd feature. We need some more snow to continue working on this one. Let us know how you like the jump!

Welcome to our new Parks Blog. This is where our park groomers and crew will be posting updates and happenings this season in Paradise Parks. When we add a cool feature, get a park ready to open, have some information on an event or want to share some freestyle news we'll post it here.
We've had a busy summer - the big news is the big grind on Park Place. As you know we didn't get Park Place open last season due primarily to the lack of snow depth down at HRM. We now know just how important that Park is - Park Place is the best terrain park on Hood so we need to get it open as early as possible. A big problem was the four foot high stumps that lined the trail, which prevented grooming until we had a substantial base built up. Well this summer we've been grinding those stumps down which will allow us to groom and build features with less snow. So we'll get Park Place open as soon as early snow allows.
Here's the parks plan for the upcoming season. With the first snow we'll set rails on Shipyard - this allows us to get our jib on even if the opening base is thin. The Zoo on Mitchell Creek and Rose City Slopestyle will most likely be the next to open, depending on how much snow we get. Hopefully we'll be able to get both Forest Park, which was an absolute hit last year, and Park Place open shortly after. And we'll construct the SuperPipe when we get more snow - those 18 foot walls require a massive amount of snow as Meadows has one of the only all natural snow SuperPipes in the country! We'll also be adding the Banked Slalom course next to Rose City Slopestyle for OSIA training. With some help from Mother Nature we should have the majority of our parks operating Christmas break. So bring on the snow – we’re ready for it!
As the other parks open the size of Shipyard will be reduced, but this year we're planning on maintaining some rails there through the season. Even two or three good features make for some fun sessions as last year's Charity Jam proved. That gives us a great park product for Meadows After Dark - Rose City Slopestyle, the Superpipe, the Banked Slalom and Shipyard are all lighted for your After Dark Freestyle enjoyment.
The snow will be flying soon and we will be ready for it. We hope you like this new Parks Blog and that you visit it often.
