Heather Canyon Opens

Heather Canyon opened up from Moon Bowl down Friday at Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort. Following avalanche reduction efforts and a final lift maintenance check, patrol opened the access gates to lower Heather for the first time this season. Also opened was the steep cliffed terrain of S&R Cliffs.

Pierce Hodges was on hand to video the first day in the Canyon.

And photographers Grant Myrdal and Richard Hallman were captured the rapture of fresh, untouched in the Canyon.

    Lots of kids pizza-ing down the canyon over the weekend. One dad told the (Heather) lifty the chair was too high after his kids failed to load it. Are we gonna slow the chair down for this EXPERT ONLY DOUBLE BLACK DIAMOND area??? If your kids cannot carve you probably shouldn't take them on any black diamond run!

    Heather is what makes Meadows special. But it would be infinitely better if, on days like yesterday when it's rock hard on the bottom, you would groom up through the gully that everyone has to funnel through. Great that the flat part leading down to the chair was groomed but you should keep going up through that funnel, on a regular basis. Ungroomed on days like yesterday it's nasty even for the experts.

    Meadows: Thanks Jim. We intermittently groom in the foothills area, depending on snow depth (we need a lot to get a cat in there) and avalanche danger (we don't want to expose the cat driver to potential slides while pushing snow.) It does mogul up so those entering the canyon need to be aware.

    I totally agree with Jim. Grooming another 100 yards would make a world of difference.
