Heather Canyon Opens

Hi Folks,

Heather Canyon opened today. The best conditions in the canyon are in the lower (skier’s right) section off Shooting Star Express. A big thank you goes out to all who worked to make this happen.

December 7th is a very early opening for Heather Canyon. This is great!

Given the current forecast for a nice inversion (sunshine in the high country with low clouds down in the valleys below) it’s probable that the canyon will remain open all the way through the weekend. It’s going to be awesome at the Meadows.

Enjoy, ride with care.

Thanks to all for getting Heather Canyon open. Those of us who work during the weekend and ski/ride during the week appreciate that you didn't wait for the extra marketing punch of a weekend opening. And the sound of running water at the runout should help convince those who think Meadows drags its feet about opening Heather!
The attitude at Meadows seems great this year. Thanks for the hard work.

Dave, Great work. Unfortunately you are about 5 days to late. They day to have heather open was sunday, blue birds, no wind, time for the storm to settle. Get on it. You want Meadows to be all that it can be, then make it happen.

Dave's reply: Given the avalanches that were released naturally and by explosives, the decision to wait was correct. Time is one of the tools that our ski patrol uses to address unstable conditions.

Thanks for taking the time for these blogs, they are great. That tip on the alternate route to meadows was a big help, I would not have considered it.

Thanks a lot, Dave! Geeze, when I took the Hood River way to and from the mountain on Friday and Saturday of last weekend it was like traveling on an L.A. freeway in rush hour! Oh, and the extra distance of that route significantly decreased the value of my 92 Toyota Tercel.

Your logistical suggestion proved costly in more ways than one! I'm going to quit skiing and boarding now, purchase a Lexus SUV with studded tires and drive around town, waiting for that dreaded 3 inches of snow that we usually get in portland once a year. Who am I kidding, I'm just bitter and poor. Not really. Just venting.

Sarcasm aside, that route really is better in many ways, so good suggestion on your part. Also, that was a considerate move to add the 40 dollar credit for current pass holders that also purchased passes last year. Great start to the season so far.

See you on the slopes.....

I would be very much in favor of doing some opening up of Jack's Woods. I think that this would elevate the signature area of Mt. Hood Meadows to a new level. Perhaps this could also be undertaken in a two step process. 1) Areas off of HRM 2) Jack's Woods.
