Rain will affect our lift operations today as the lower mountain is very soggy. HRM will be closed to public today and we don’t expect any higher mountain lifts either. Lifts will run from 9 AM - 4 PM today. Midweek bus programs have been postponed. The good news is the forecast says freezing levels drop overnight for new snow on Friday, in time for Meadows after Dark with 9 AM - 9 PM hours Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Mt. Hood, OR (For Release January 26, 2017) — Forty-nine years ago today, Mt. Hood Meadows officially opened with ceremonies attended by over 200 dignitaries including America’s only Olympic gold medalist Gretchen Fraser. The ski area launched with two lifts, a T-bar and a rope tow. Fraser’s inaugural run was the full 1,061 vertical drop from the top of the Blue lift, ending at the base area lodge, skiing through the grand opening ribbon. And while the run took only a few minutes, it was the culmination of an initiative that began more than two years earlier when Portland businessman Franklin G. Drake saw the U.S. Forest Service announcement requesting proposals to build a new ski area on Mt. Hood.

Mt. Hood Meadows will open on a limited basis Friday (November 25) operating at least one lift from 9 AM - 4 PM. Buttercup is scheduled to operate, largely due to the resort's innovative snow harvesting program. With a forecast of 12 - 18 inches officials speculate that more lifts and terrain will be opened through the day or the weekend. 

The six inches of snow has grown our base area snow depth to a foot, deep enough to get cats on the hill. Snow harvesting efforts began Wednesday morning in advance of a major winter storm that is forecast to drop two to three FEET through the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. 

Uphill hiking is prohibited in permit area - please follow the designated route!

Less than a year ago he suffered a traumatic brain injury that left him bed bound, unable to get up and unable to even talk. The prognosis did not look good. He was admitted to Marquis Centennial a skilled nursing facility for rehab, and just seven months later, Bill returned to the slopes.

Super El Nino Storm Drops 20 Inches in 24 Hours Over 100 Inch Base Now

Meadows received 20 inches of snow in 24 hours adding to the 254" of snow received this season!

  • Meadows Surpasses One Hundred Inch Snow Depth at the Base Area and 174 inches at Mid-ountain
  • Super Snowy El Nino delivers twenty inches in last 24 hours
  • 254” of snow so far this season (eclipsing last year’s 195” total season snowfall)
  • Mid-mountain snow depth now deeper than the length of a food truck

Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort was already one of the top ten snowiest ski areas in North America - before this latest storm dropped twenty inches of snow in the last 24 hours. Meadows has now received 254 inches of snow this season - surpassing last year’s 195 inches total season snowfall. Meadows averages 430 inches each season, which should be easily reached if the Super El Nino continues to deliver the snow.

Meadows FilmFest winner Jake Woodard should have been listening to Dust in the Wind by Kansas Monday morning, as he shred the powdery slopes at Meadows. The major storm blew in Monday, and he was able to get the best of the light dusty powder before lifts were placed on wind standby in the afternoon. The National Weather Service forecasts another 2 to 3 feet of snow for Meadows through Thursday, a perfect early Christmas present for all of our skiers and snowboarders!

Mt. Hood Meadows may have high speed access from bottom to top Saturday, the first time this season. With the series of storms, Cascade Express has been either in “Storm in Progress” or “Storm Recovery” this early season. And Shooting Star Express, damaged in a November windstorm, was repaired and cleared for service Friday evening. Today marks the first mild weather day that gives our mountain teams the best shot at opening the upper mountain.

Mt. Hood Meadows after a 54" December snow stormMt. Hood Meadows has received more than 100 inches of snow so far this early season which is about fifteen percent above average and already half the amount received the entire season last year. With more than four feet of snow in the base area Meadows has some of the best conditions in the country, and another major storm is forecast this week. Mark who worked Mt. Hood Express Friday is the best ops guy you have had in years. His focus helped get the lift line moving. He was noticeably more on it and It definitely made for more efficient lift lines. He should train everyone at Meadows. While I was not using the singles line, I was also impressed Mark seemingly understood that the singles line should also be the fast lane. Thanks for having great folks like Mark.

Meadows opens for the season Friday!

MT. HOOD, OR (Immediate Release) – Mt. Hood Meadows will begin daily operations for the 2015/16 season Friday. Meadows has received nearly a foot-and-a-half of new snow in the last 36 hours from a major powder making Northwest storm. The resort reports a 22-inch base at the 5500 foot base area level, and more than four feet at the 6200 foot level. Forecasts say the storm could drop a foot or more through the weekend.

The storm has dropped wet heavy snow, perfect for base building and enough for the resort to operate the Mt. Hood Express high speed quad along with two other lifts and the Ballroom Carpet conveyer from 9 AM - 4 PM each day.

Meadows Launches Shipyard Rope Tow

Mt. Hood Meadows has added a new feature to the Shipyard Rail Park - a rope tow that allows freestylers to take continuous laps in the park without having to hike or take a longer chairlift ride. The park has been extremely popular this season and currently has eight rail features for jibbing. The rope tow will make the park more popular and fun, says resort spokesman Dave Tragethon.

Hood Meadows opened for the season Monday - on an 18" snow depth in the base area thanks to a scary "Pineapple Express" storm that literally went south. Instead of deluging the resort with rain, it chilled and dropped about 10" of snow after a soaking. Meadows mountain crews rallied, hauled parking lot snow to the slopes and got two lifts running today. And Vista Express is scheduled to operate Tuesday!

Mt. Hood Meadows will open for the season Monday. The resort has two lifts - Buttercup and Easy Rider - scheduled from 9 AM - 4 PM. The resort has an 18 inch base and thanks to lowering freezing levels, is receiving snow rather than the rain that was initially forecast. Snow harvesting will begin to supplement the base area snowpack and build the ramps for the two lifts scheduled, as well as an 8 feature jib park for freestyling, and the Ballroom Carpet beginner’s conveyer. The lift ticket will be $49.

Despite our best efforts, Mt. Hood Meadows is putting lift operations on hold, until more snow falls. The resort had been operating the Buttercup lift and a jib park on an 11” base, supplemented by snow making and harvesting. The forecast for 4 - 7 inches of snow Monday didn’t materialize, and as such we will wait for new snow before continuing lift operations.

Anticipation - the freezing level is taking it’s sweet time dropping. We are expecting snow but it won’t accumulate soon enough for us to prepare for Saturday. Our snow harvesting crews are standing by to move what we can in anticipation of Sunday operations.
