Slow to Drop Freezing Level Means Saturday is Out - How About Sunday?

Categories: Guest Connection Weather Blog Media Center

Anticipation - the freezing level is taking it’s sweet time dropping. We are expecting snow but it won’t accumulate soon enough for us to prepare for Saturday. Our snow harvesting crews are standing by to move what we can in anticipation of Sunday operations. We will keep you apprised here on this blog and our conditions page as we start accumulating and ultimately transporting snow. What lifts, how much will be open and hours of operation are dependent on the snowfall, and we’ll update as soon as it is determined, most likely by early Saturday afternoon. Thanks for your patience and think snow!

Special Weather Statement Issued for Mt. Hood:
A MAJOR CHANGE IN THE WEATHER PATTERN IS ON THE WAY. A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL MOVE THROUGH THE REGION FROM NORTH TO SOUTH TONIGHT. WHILE SNOW LEVELS WILL INITIALLY BE HIGH...THEY WILL LOWER DRAMATICALLY BEHIND THE FRONT. AS A RESULT...POST FRONTAL SHOWERS MAY FALL AS A MIX OF RAIN AND SNOW DOWN TO THE VALLEY FLOOR LATE TONIGHT AND SATURDAY BEFORE THE PRECIPITATION ENDS BY SATURDAY NIGHT. TRAVEL WILL BECOME INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT THROUGH THE CASCADES AND EVENTUALLY THE FOOTHILLS TONIGHT AS RAIN CHANGES TO SNOW AND STARTS TO ACCUMULATE ON AREA ROADS. AN INITIAL BURST OF HEAVY SNOW IS EXPECTED WITH THE COLD FRONT TONIGHT...THEN SNOW SHOWERS WILL CONTINUE THROUGH MUCH OF SATURDAY. SEVERAL INCHES OF NEW SNOW ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS BY THE TIME SNOW TAPERS OFF SATURDAY NIGHT.

7 day forecast for snow on Mt. HoodThe big question is will the freezing level drop and pile up enough snow before this moisture system moves out? The forecast shows potential for snow accumulation, but we really need it to pile up soon in order to have a shot at Sunday operations. Best case is if the moisture pump would stall out a while and the temps drop and we get flat out dumped on. Keep doing your snow dances!
