Mt Hood Meadows offers free shuttles from Hood River to alleviate peak day traffic congestion

Categories: New for 2018 Transportation Guest Connection Media Center

Mt. Hood Meadows has three parking lots and encourages car pooling especially on peak days. Mt. Hood Meadows will run free shuttles from the Hood River events site to the ski area throughout the Christmas holiday and weekends in January and February. The shuttle is designed to alleviate peak day traffic on Mt. Hood.

The shuttle departs from the Hood River events site starting at 8:30 and runs through the morning, with additional convenient runs scheduled in the afternoon. A schedule has been published with the exact departure and returning times from Meadows.

Meadows C.O.O. Jake Bolland says three buses will run continuous routes to Meadows on days that Mt. Hood has traditionally been congested by snow seekers. "We are doing our part to make the Mt. Hood experience more enjoyable for everyone, and for those heading to Meadows the shuttle service provides a more convenient and direct way to get here, dropping passengers off right at our main lodge. This will also reduce Mt. Hood traffic congestion on these popular days.”

Bolland says this is a new aspect of Meadows' Peak Day operation, and as a learning company, he anticipates improvements to the free shuttle program along the way, urging passengers to, "Be sure to check the Peak Day shuttle schedule website page for any changes, and plan ahead to make sure you are making your departing connection back to the Hood River Event Site parking lot.”

The shuttle will be boarded on a first come, first board basis with the first shuttle departing at 8:30 AM.

Shuttles are scheduled to operate every day starting Saturday, December 23 through Monday, January 1, with the exception of Christmas Day; and weekends in January and February as well as the Martin Luther King and President's Day Monday holidays.

Christmas Holiday Scheduled days: 12/23, 12/24, 12/26, 12/27, 12/28, 12/29, 12/30, 12/31, 1/1

Saturdays and Sundays in January and February 2018, MLK Day (1/15) and President's Day (2/19)

Meadows has a long tradition of initiating transportation programs to make the mountain more accessible. The resort offers free shuttling to team members from Sandy and Hood River, encourages car pooling through Drive Less Connect, supports several shuttle services and runs a park and ride program from Portland weekends and holidays.

Meadows will also open its Hood River Meadows (HRM) parking lot early, and operate its lower Hood River Express chairlift exclusively from 8:30 - 9:00 AM on peak days (conditions permitting) giving those who arrive early and park at HRM first tracks and an extra half hour of morning warm ups. Bolland says this will also improve traffic flow on Mt. Hood highways, explaining, “Opening Hood River Express early will attract more of our early arriving guests to park at the HRM lot, while others who need the equipment rental or snow sports services of the main base area park there. This simultaneous parking will improve traffic flow and reduce the likelihood of traffic back ups into our main lots.” Those parking at HRM can purchase tickets at the Hood River Meadows lodge which was remodeled this summer to increase overall accomodations. The cafe was also expanded and from eighteen to 42 seats and is serving up breakfast sandwiches. Meadows has partnered with 80/20 Fine Foods food truck, to offer more breakfast and lunch options as well at HRM.
