Most people think about avalanches only when there is tons of snow. That’s not always the case. In fact, the current weather system is setting up some potential slide conditions in the backcountry even if the next snowfall isn’t significant. Mt. Hood Meadows snow patrol will present a course on Avalanche Awareness Saturday to introduce and explain where and why avalanches occur, who gets caught and why, and provide a basic approach to staying safe in the backcountry. This course targets the unaware backcountry traveler, and introduces the recognition of avalanche danger and how to reduce the risk.
