Always Use Retention Devices to Prevent Runaway Equipment

Responsibility Code #5

Skis and boards without owners become unguided missiles on our slopes. Use brakes and leashes, and not just when you're riding! Many boards become missiles when they’ve been left unattended or when they are being carried.

A gust of wind when a board is overturned or a small slip while carrying can cause boards to take off without their owners. Oregon Skier Statutes require devices to prevent runaway equipment. Skiers should have functioning brakes that are sized appropriately. Snowboarders and telemark skiers should use leashes and not just when riding. Attach them to a fixed object when stopped and consider attaching it to your person when carrying.

Be responsible for your gear. Please don’t let your board or skis become missiles.
