Thanks for the Preview Days Now When Will the Season Begin?

Categories: Guest Connection Weather Blog Media Center

Taking first season runs on Vista at Mt. Hood MeadowsWe want to thank everyone who came up to enjoy our seven preview days this early season. It was a great turn out, we had a lot of fun and even got more than just a few of our base area lifts operating. This week’s storm allowed us to open Mt. Hood Express Friday that delighted guests with some early season powder turns; and Vista Express Saturday with more upper mountain plunging! We really want to give it up to our mountain team that put in the extra effort through snow harvesting and hauling to make the previews happen. Heck - the first four days we only had a 10 inch natural base!

Now the big question is, when will the season begin? And the answer is - probably Thursday, based on what we see in this week’s weather. There is a huge storm that will be pounding the northwest early this week. Lots of moisture but the freezing level will rise to 7500 feet Monday, then drop to 4,000 feet by Wednesday. We believe we’ll get snow on both ends of the storm, coming and going, with a good dose of precip in between. Monday and Tuesday will be washouts, and Wednesday we’ll need to prep the mountain as we won’t be able to put snowcats on the snowpack in this storm.

So, if all goes well, we expect to open the season with daily operations scheduled beginning Thursday, depending on the storm. We won’t speculate on what lifts, how much of the mountain will be open or when night operations will start at this time. We’ll know much more after Tuesday.

We are excited to kick this season off. Keep checking this blog and our social pages for further updates.
