Mt. Hood Meadows will offer guided snowshoe tours from the top of its Vista five times this season. The experience includes a ride up the Vista highspeed quad, a and a gentle hike along the spectacular White River Canyon, above timberline and into the wooded areas of Mt. Hood Meadows. Five tour dates have been announced for this spectacular experience, which is topped off with dining at the Alpenstube restaurant.
The first scheduled tour is Saturday, February 25. Additional dates are set for Saturdays March 11, March 25, April 8 and April 22. The experience must be reserved in advance at the resort's website. Tours include snowshoe rentals, scenic chair ride, guided hike and dinner created by the Meadows culinary services team at the Alpenstube. The cost for the entire experience including dinner is $60.
Participants meet at the Mt. Hood Meadows Rental Center at 2:30 to get equipped with snowshoes and meet the guides. Participants will trek to the bottom of the Vista Express lift, to load last chair at 3:30. This will allow the snowshoers to virtually have the mountain to themselves on the snowshoe excursion. Vista is well named for the expansive views towards Central Oregon the lift provides. From the 6,600 foot level the views of White River Canyon, the south Cascades and panoramic sunscapes await.
The descent is along the southern boundary of the resort on Vista Ridge, through Mitchel Creek and back to the lodge. Participants should be in good physical condition, even though the trek is primarily downhill, taking up to 90 minutes. They need to wear a comfortable winter boot (boots are not available for rent).
Alternative Routes or Cancellations- Weather may result in the use of an alternate route through Umbrella Falls Snowshoe Trail systems. Tours may be canceled as a result of weather conditions.
