Porcini. Chanterelle. Lobster. These are the rock stars in the wild mushroom kingdom. They will be starring in a five course Fall Harvest Mushroom Dinner served at Mt. Hood Meadows September 29. Each course features a flavorful fall mushroom and is paired with brews from partner Everybody’s Brewing.
Mushrooms have been used for their unique ability to add flavor in lots of different cultures’ cuisines. Although they’re actually fungi, mushrooms are lumped in the vegetable category for cooking purposes. Hearty meat-like mushrooms are an delicious and nutritious way to enhance any meal.”
And, if you believe in folklore, you may live forever on a mushroom diet. That’s what ancient Egyptians believed according to the Hieroglyphics of 4600 years ago. The delicious flavor of mushrooms intrigued the pharaohs of Egypt so much that they decreed that mushrooms were food for royalty and that no commoner could ever touch them, assuring themselves the entire supply of mushrooms. In various other civilizations throughout the world including Russia, China, Greece, Mexico and Latin America, mushroom rituals were practiced. Many believed that mushrooms had properties that could produce super- human strength, help in finding lost objects and lead the soul to the realm of the gods.
